What is Respite Care?
Channel Islands Social Services (CISS) specializes in providing Lifespan Respite Care to a variety of families where the primary caregiver could benefit from a short break. Respite is planned or emergency care provided to a child or adult with special needs, or children in the care of a Foster and Kinship family, in order to provide temporary relief to family caregivers. Most care is provided in the family home with occasional community outings.

Who Pays for My Family’s Respite Care?
CISS provides respite care in the Ventura County and North Los Angeles areas of Southern California. Although CISS does accept private payment when requested, every effort is made to find an alternative funding source for families. Reimbursement for respite care for children and adults with developmental disabilities is provided by contract and individual authorization with the local regional centers: Tri-Counties Regional Center or NLA Regional Center Families must contact their child’s Service Coördinator at the regional center to request CISS Respite, and the Regional Center determines how many respite hours to authorize.
-
Funding for the Foster & Kinship Respite Program is provided through First 5 and the County of Ventura. Families qualify to receive up to 12 hours per month of care. The County contracts with CISS for a total of hours and when those hours have been exhausted, respite will be discontinued until the start of the new contract with the County.
